Once Upon a Design

In the latest special edition ink series, the friendly animal cast of Ferris Wheel Press find themselves on a journey all the way to Japan, where they visit the home of Ginza Tsutaya Books in their award-winning building, the GINZA SIX.

In this collection, we start by appreciating the modern architectural elements of GINZA SIX, which also houses 13 of the most renowned luxury fashion brands in the world. We then venture into the stunning Tsutaya Books store, where our Canadian animal friends explore the wood and brass-clad stationery floor. Finally, we find ourselves arriving at one of Tsutaya Books’ signature display cases, which showcase writing instruments, stationery treasures, and precious objects from all over the world. Discover all the details of their incredible shop through our latest Curious Collaborations Series ink collection.

Notable design details:

  • Inspired by the GINZA SIX building in Japan
  • Phoenix silhouette, statuesque icon that rests on the gas lamps found on the city streets in Ginza
  • Stationery silhouettes incorporated into the architecture of the building, i.e., fountain pen nib, rulers as beams, paper clips as door handles, bulldog clips as chandeliers, letterpress blocks in windows, books spines as glass window panes
  • 6 animals visiting from Canada, can you find them all?

Magical Metropolis is a really strong, saturated purple that gets a fascinating yellow hue sheening over it, which in places can lead to a brown tone - but in a way puzzles the eye and is not at all unpleasant. Poison Envy still has my heart for purples that hide themselves under a mysterious sheen, but if you're not into shimmer inks, this can be a good replacement that hits some of the same notes.

The ink is great when you get it on some nice paper, with the right amount of ink flow, and the right amount pooling, if you can get all those right you'll find a nice purple with gold sheen, otherwise it ends up really dark and you don't see much purple, but you get the gold sheen, or it's lighter and you see more of the purple but you don't get gold sheen

Beautiful purple, however the gold doesn’t seem to show up in my rollerball pen.

I've just done a quick test. I love the purple; it's rich and dark. The bronze was super subtle for me, but I was testing on an absorbent watercolour paper so will have to see how it is on other papers, but I definitely like it.

Ink is lovely deep purple color that is smooth and fluid to write with in a fountain pen. Ferris Wheel Press inks are all fantastic and a pleasure to use. Wide range of colours, shimmer and regular inks. #FWP. Magical Metropolis is a great addition to my lilac, lavender and purple inks.
